A verona day trip from lake garda is one of the easiest big-city outings you can add to a lake holiday. Likegarda runs a full-day coach tour from 10 meeting points around Lake Garda, including Limone, Lazise and Riva del Garda, for $73 per person. The day lasts 8 to 10 hours on an air-conditioned bus. You arrive in Verona around 10:00 AM, get a 1.5-hour guided walk past the Arena, Piazza delle Erbe and Juliet's House, then about 1.5 hours of free time before the coach leaves around 4:00 PM. This page covers the price, the exact timings, what the coach does not include, and when the train from Peschiera or Desenzano is the better choice.

About This Tour

Likegarda runs this full-day coach trip from Lake Garda resorts to Verona, the city of Romeo and Juliet and of one of the finest Roman amphitheaters still in use. Round-trip transfers run from locations including Limone, Lazise and Riva del Garda, and your meeting point depends on the option you select when booking. The coach ride is about 1.5 hours each way, so most of the day is on the road, not in the city.

Verona Around the Day Trip

Verona is a working city, not a resort, and a day here goes fast. A little planning makes the free hours count.

What the Walk Covers

The city has developed for over 2,000 years, and the guided 1.5-hour walk hits the main sequence: the Verona Arena, one of the world's finest Roman amphitheaters still in use, then Piazza dei Signori and Piazza delle Erbe, Juliet's House, Castelvecchio with the Arche Scaligere, and the Ponte Pietra over the Adige. That leaves your 1.5 free hours for Via Mazzini shopping, a long lunch, or one interior visit of your own, since no entry tickets are included. You cannot fit all of that in.

Pick one.

Adding a Lake Day Before or After

If Verona leaves you wanting more of the lake rather than less, the south shore sights pair well with this trip. Scaligero Castle in Sirmione costs $11.13 (€10) full and opens Tuesday to Sunday 8:30-19:15 on the Ministry page, and the Grottoes of Catullus cost the same with hours of 8:30-17:00 Tuesday to Saturday and 8:30-14:00 Sunday, closed Mondays, so check before going. A combined ticket covering the castle, the grottoes and the Roman villa in Desenzano costs $22.26 (€20) and is valid 7 days.

Getting to Your Meeting Point

From the south-east shore, ATV Verona line 164 runs Garda-Bardolino-Lazise-Gardaland-Peschiera-Castelnuovo-Verona, and lines 483 and 484 link Malcesine, Garda, Peschiera and the north-east shore towns, so a bus can carry you to a pick-up point. On the water, Navigazione Laghi charges ordinary one-way fares of $1.67 (€1.50) to $19.48 (€17.50) by zone, and a return costs double. From 2 November to 12 March the only service on the lake is the Torri-Maderno car ferry, so winter meeting points on the far shore need a road or bus route instead.

What the Price Covers

The table below separates what the $73 covers from what you pay on top. Read it before you budget for the day.

Included, Extra and Excluded

The $73 per person covers the air-conditioned coach, the tour guide, the city tour of Verona with a local guide, 1 guide for every 20 people, and all taxes, fees and handling charges. Food and drinks are not included, and neither is hotel pick-up and drop-off, so plan your own lunch in Verona and your own way to the meeting point. No entry tickets are mentioned as included, and the listing lists none as a mandatory extra, so treat Arena or museum admissions as your own cost if you want to go inside anything during free time.

Pets are not allowed and the tour is not suitable for wheelchair users.

What to Budget on Top

The tour includes no meal, so a lunch and a coffee on Via Mazzini come out of your own pocket. No tasting is part of the day. If you would rather spend a lake day eating and drinking instead, the Bardolino vineyard tour and wine tasting costs $40 per person for 1.5 hours with five wines, and the Lugana wine tasting near Sirmione starts at $39 per person.

Book It If, Skip It If

Book it if

  • your base is the north shore, since 10 meeting points include Limone, Lazise and Riva del Garda, where trains do not run
  • you want coach transfers, a guide and a 1.5-hour city walk all covered for $73 per person
  • you want live and audio guiding in English and German with 1 guide for every 20 people

Skip it if

  • you are a wheelchair user or travel with pets, since the tour suits neither
  • you want a slower city day, when travelling independently by train from Peschiera or Desenzano is the better choice
  • you need hotel pickup, a meal or entry tickets, since food, drinks and hotel pick-up are excluded and no entry tickets are included

Pros and Cons

An honest read of this listing against the alternatives.

What we genuinely like

  • $73 per person with transport, guide and the city walk all covered
  • 10 meeting points, so north-shore bases like Limone and Riva are served
  • 1 guide for every 20 people keeps the walking tour workable in a group of up to 55
  • Free cancellation up to 24 hours in advance, and reserve now pay later
  • Live guide and audio guide in English and German

The honest downsides

  • About 1.5 hours on the coach each way
  • Free time is limited, about 1.5 hours after the guided walk, so no museum deep-dives
  • Food and drinks are not included and there is no hotel pick-up
  • Not suitable for wheelchair users, and pets are not allowed
  • Group of up to 55 people is not a small-group experience

Who it's NOT for: Travellers who want a slower city day should travel independently by train from Peschiera or Desenzano.

Before You Go

Weather, money and the meeting point are the three things worth sorting the night before.

Heat, Shoes and Timing

You spend about 1.5 hours walking plus time on your feet in the city, so bring water, a hat and comfortable shoes. Arrival is around 10:00 AM and departure around 4:00 PM. There is no stated minimum age and no difficulty rating, but the tour is not suitable for wheelchair users and pets are not allowed.

Money

The tour is priced in dollars at $73 per person. Verona itself takes euros, and the European Central Bank reference rate is 1 EUR = 1.1130 USD. Lunch, coffee and any entry tickets are extra, since food, drinks and hotel transfers are excluded from the price.

Reaching Your Meeting Point

With no hotel pick-up, plan the first leg yourself. Navigazione Laghi passenger ferries cover the lake in season, with fares from $1.67 (€1.50) to $19.48 (€17.50) one way by zone, but remember that from 2 November to 12 March only the Torri-Maderno car ferry runs. On the east shore, ATV line 164 links Garda, Bardolino, Lazise, Peschiera and Verona.

Bring your booking confirmation, water and sun protection, and check your exact meeting point on the booking page.

How the Tour Runs

The day has five timed parts and two reference times, arrival around 10:00 AM in Verona and departure around 4:00 PM. Meeting and drop-off points depend on the option you select.

Meeting Point

This activity has 10 meeting points, and yours depends on the option you book. Locations include Limone, Lazise and Riva del Garda, with round-trip transfers from a host of Lake Garda resorts. There is no hotel pick-up, so check your exact meeting point on the booking page and arrive early.

The Day, Part by Part

The transfer to Verona takes about 1.5 hours. Arrival in Verona is approximately 10:00 AM. In the city the day is split into 2 hours of visit and walk, a 1.5-hour guided sightseeing walk, and 1.5 hours of break and free time.

The guided walk passes the Verona Arena, Piazza dei Signori, Piazza delle Erbe, Juliet's House with its messages of love, Castelvecchio with the Arche Scaligere tombs of the Scala family, and the Roman Ponte Pietra bridge over the Adige. Free time includes shopping on Via Mazzini, one of the most elegant streets in Italy. The coach leaves Verona at approximately 4:00 PM for the 1.5-hour return, dropping at 10 locations around the lake.

By Train or By Coach: Getting Between Lake Garda and Verona

The coach is not the only way. From the south-east shore a train is another way to reach Verona, on your own schedule.

The Train from Desenzano or Peschiera

Peschiera del Garda and Desenzano del Garda both have stations on the line to Verona, so a same-day return is possible from either. If you are staying in Sirmione, Desenzano is across the water, a 20-minute ordinary ferry in fare zone 1 at $3.90 (€3.50). Check train times on Trenitalia before travelling.

Where the Coach Wins

Riva del Garda has no railway station. The nearest is Rovereto, with regular Trentino Trasporti buses to Torbole, Riva and Arco, which makes a self-organised train day from the north shore a two-leg affair. From Riva, Limone, Malcesine, Garda and Bardolino, a coach from a meeting point near your base that drives straight through is simpler.

The cost in time is about 1.5 hours each way on this tour. If your base has no pick-up point at all, the reverse Lake Garda tour from Verona with cruise runs the other direction from Verona at $123 per person for 7.5 hours.

Is Riva, Limone or Malcesine Too Far for Verona

North-shore travellers ask this constantly, because the train is not an option for them. The honest answer is that the day is long but workable.

Door-to-door from the North Shore

A travel blog puts Malcesine about 40 miles and roughly 1 hour 20 minutes from Verona by car or bus. This tour lists about 1.5 hours each way. Count on the full 8-10 hour day.

Check the start time of your option on the booking page.

The Alternative: Sleep in Verona

With no railway station in Riva, the nearest is Rovereto with Trentino Trasporti buses to Torbole, Riva and Arco, which makes an independent evening in Verona awkward. The cleaner fix is an overnight, or taking the trip the other way: the Lake Garda tour from Verona with cruise at $123 per person for 7.5 hours starts in the city and brings the lake to you. If cities are not the point of your holiday at all, the Dolomites day trip from Lake Garda covers mountains instead, at $95 per person for 10-12 hours with hotel pick-up included.
